To allow staff time to enjoy the holiday season, the National office will be closed Tuesday, Dec. 24, and Wednesday, Dec. 25.We’ll be open on New Year’s Eve from 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. CT for any last-minute AFTR or CPE-related questions. On Wednesday, Jan. 1, our office will be closed to celebrate the New Year. Cheers to a successful 2025!
Potential Government Shutdown and IRS Impact: What NATP Members Should Know

With the Dec. 21 deadline for Congress to reach a funding agreement quickly approaching, NATP is monitoring developments and their potential effects on the IRS. If a deal is not reached, the government will shut down, and the IRS will furlough approximately two-thirds of its workforce, according to a contingency plan released by the U.S. Treasury Department.During the initial five business days of a shutdown, 30,063 of the IRS’s 89,944 employees would remain on duty to manage critical operations.

What IRS Activities Will Stop?
If a shutdown occurs, several significant IRS functions will pause, including:

Audit functions and return examinations
Issuing non-automated refunds
Non-automated collections
Taxpayer services (outside of filing season)
Legal work on actions paused during the shutdown
Processing non-disaster relief transcripts
Most headquarters and administrative functions not tied to the safety of life or property

Which IRS Activities Will Continue?
The following activities will proceed despite a potential shutdown:

Designing and printing tax forms for the upcoming filing season
Mail processing
Criminal law enforcement and undercover operations
Completing and testing programs for the next filing year
Processing payments and disaster relief transcripts
Limited taxpayer services during filing season

IRS Releases 2025 Standard Mileage Rates
The IRS has released the 2025 optional standard mileage rates used in calculating the deductible costs of operating a vehicle for business, charitable, medical or moving purposes. The rates apply to electric and hybrid-electric vehicles as well as vehicles powered by gasoline and diesel fuel. Beginning Jan. 1, 2025, the standard rate for the use of a car, van, pickup truck or panel truck will be:

70 cents per mile driven for business use, up 3 cents from 2024
21 cents per mile driven for medical purposes or for moves by qualified active-duty members of the armed forces, unchanged from last year
14 cents per mile driven in service of charitable organizations, the rate is set by statute and unchanged from 2024
